The Technical Program Manager (TPM) works on our most complex goals -- those that require coordination between SFN and other parts of Shopify. TPMs partner closely with product managers, software developers, data scientists, and UX designers in SFN and other parts of Shopify to build credible plans to deliver capabilities that will delight our merchants.
Some of what you'll be doing:
Building strong relationships with product management, engineering, data science, UX, and operations teams to ensure we're aligned on the most important priorities
Establishing credible delivery and release plans that ensure the work is sequenced properly to address dependencies and feature interactions
Helping the cross-functional team break the work into manageable pieces that can be delivered frequently
Identifying and managing risks and critical dependencies
Tracking progress towards our goals, keeping the leadership team updated on progress, escalating critical risks/issues, and engaging leadership when pivotal decisions are needed.
Identifying the processes and rituals that will be most effective in helping us achieve our goals
Facilitating regular cross-team retrospectives
Qualifications
Technical Program Managers need a high level of context and understanding of how the product works. You've probably gained that through 10+ years experience working on software products in some capacity, and by doing some of the work listed above. You've most likely worked with different approaches to delivering software (like agile, iterative, incremental). We're also looking for someone who:
Can quickly identify how best to communicate information based on the audience and situation
Understands the technical aspects of software development well enough to identify where different parts of the system interact with each other and to ask the right questions to make sure teams have well thought out solutions
Is comfortable with ambiguity, can identify when ambiguity is helping us, and when it isn't
Has built a toolkit of different practices to help teams succeed, and is able to adapt those practices suit a variety of circumstances. For example:
Breaking down work (e.g. user stories, job stories)
Sizing work (e.g. story points, t-shirt sizing, relative sizing)
Planning work (e.g. sprint planning, stack ranking, relative prioritization)
Managing meetings effectively
Conducting meaningful retrospectives
Tracking progress and understanding when teams are blocked
Knows how to prioritize their own work, and can quickly help teams understand what's most important
Is able to lead and influence a group of passionate, strongly opinionated people who care deeply about making commerce better for everyone
Holds teams accountable to commitments.
It would be nice if you have experience in supply chain management, logistics, and/or warehouse systems management, but it's not required -- we'll teach you!
